Old 96 District, now a popular tourist destination in South Carolina, was originally inhabited by the Cherokee. This region was the birth place of the Confederacy. The region continued support a great amount of textile mills and various other businesses. The region is now a destination for tourists containing: churches, battle sites (both Revolutionary War and Civil War), and other tidbits of history. It spans across five counties, Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens and McCormick.
Demographics
There are 8,496 households out of which 28.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.5% are married couples living together, 21.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% are non-families. 32.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.05Census 2000, there are 22,071 people, 8,496 households, and 5,174 families residing in the city.There are 9,373 housing units at an average density of 264.3/km² (684.6/mi²).

The median income for a household in the city is $26,284, and the median income for a family is $32,573. Males have a median income of $26,477 versus $21,476 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,347. 25.0% of the population and 18.1% of families are below the poverty line.Out of the total population, 34.4% of those under the age of 18 and 18.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line

Greenwood holds one of the region's largest freight rail yards.Greenwood's nickname is "The Emerald City."
Greenwood was said to have the widest main street in the world atone time, before Red Square in Moscow was judged to be wider.
Greenwood is also the home of Lander University
Public Services
Greenwood contains Self Regional Health Care, one of the
largest in the area. Self is known for their high quality Vascular surgery system, Cancer Center, Heart Center, and Neurosurgery among many other things. They offer a Level III Emergency Care Center, that is open 24 hours per day.
An excellent Family Medicine residency program is housed by Self Regional Hospital. The Family Physicians admit patients to the hospital, work in the Emergency Department, and are very active in many areas of local health care delivery.
Another notable medical establishment in Greenwood is the Genetic Center [1], a nonprofit institute, organized to provide clinical genetic services and laboratory testing, to develop educational programs and materials, and to conduct research in the field of medical genetics.

Every year in June, Greenwood plays host to the South Carolina "Festival of Flowers". Park Seed Corporation, located in Greenwood and one of the largest gardening companies in the world, plays a large part in the Emerald City's ability to host this event.
