Greenwood Lake is attracting attention and new residents from all over the country and the world. The lake is surrounded by several little towns, Cross Hill SC, Chappells SC, Ninety Six SC, Ware Shoals, and Waterloo SC. The largest nearby town is Greenwood SC. Greenwood is the county seat, a mid-size town that is continuously changing and growing. Welcoming new businesses that fit the vision of the town now and in the future. Greenwood is about 10 miles from the lake at it's closest and about 25 miles at it's furtherest point. The lake runs through Greenwood , Laurens, and Newberry Counties and is 21 miles long, it resembles a centipede in its shape and all the coves that jut off would be the legs.

 The depth of the water from one end to the other vary quite a bit The upper end near Ware Shoals can be as shallow as 2 ft. in some places to an average of 6 to 7 ft. and on the end of the lake nearest Ninety Six and Buzzards Roost ( the dam) can be as deep as 60 ft. with an average depth over all of the lake of around 22 ft.

The lake is managed by a lake department set up by Greenwood County in 2006 to oversee the lake, protect the natural resources, and comply with FERC
regulations witch govern the habitat around the lake.

The lake has vast amounts of undeveloped land in the areas around it and it can be best described as having a rural feel rather than a resort atmosphere. There are however is one gated or restricted community which offers amenities such as golf, tennis, swimming, marinas, fitness centers, small cafes, and central club houses. Stoney Pointe with it's British style course located nearest Greenwood  and is in Greenwood County.

Some of the other restricted communities in Greenwood County are Eagles Harbour, Harbourside, Pucketts Ferry and Terrapin Pointe

In Laurens and Newberry Counties are Crystal Bay, Ridgewood Harbour, Summerset Bay and Watersedge.

Other areas of the lake outside of the restricted neighborhoods are a mix of  small cabins, manufactured homes,  campers, mid size homes and large estates all mingled together for an
eclectic atmosphere.

Greenwood Lake Facts

Most people are very surprised at the size of the lake, It is 20 miles long,

has 212 miles of shoreline 11,400 acres. The maximum depth is around 69 ft.

and elevations Lake Greenwood is man made was created by the

construction of the Buzzard’s Roost Dam in 1940. Water was

initially impounded to a surface elevation of 440, but was later

revised to 439 msl. This is currently normal pond. It is located

on the Saluda and Reedy Rivers

rural feel the lake has gone through tremendous changes in the last two decades.

When I was growing up here the lake was a place you drove to from town to swim,boat, ski, fish or just "hang out" not many people actually lived on the lake. My dad and I used to fish the lake and sell our catch to the only restaurant to speak of, on the lake, Blazers, which was torn down and Palmetto Crossing a new development stands there now and plans for a new restaurant across the highway will be a symbol of  the new direction Lake Greenwood is taking for the future.
