"A Chip Off The Old Block"
Neil Cost Custom Turkey Call Maker Taught Me How To Market
Neil Cost is my dad. He sat in our living room in his favorite chair
and made handmade turkey calls. He was an unknown in a little town
called Greenwood South Carolina. Day after day he whittled and honed
hand carved wooden boxes into instruments that made a sound that would
call turkeys. The more he made and tried them out the more he was able
to tweak them making them sound more and more like the real wild turkey.
He would sit in the woods for hours just listening to them talk to each
other and would come home and tune the call until he had the sound down
to perfection. 

He threw more calls away in the early days then he kept because he
wouldn't settle for just "ok". When he was satisfied that he had an
inventory of calls he could put his name to he signed them and took them
to the local outdoor supply store and asked them if they would buy them
from him to resell. They refused him saying there was no market for
them. Not one to give up he went home and started promoting them on his
own. First among local friends who were turkey hunters and they told
their friends and so on until he had so many orders he was working day
and night to keep up with the orders that were coming from all over the
country. He would send them out out with instructions on how to best
use them to make the sounds correctly and how to keep them tuned along
with a brochure about himself and how he came to be interested in turkey
hunting and how he couldn't find a call that pleased him so he decided
to make one for himself. After having great success with hunting turkeys
he decide to make more. His business grew until he was a national
brand.
The local supply store that had turned him down years before begged
for calls to sell. Investors wanted to set up a manufacturing facility
to mass produce the handmade calls but he said no, he knew that the
secret was in the fact that he hand tuned every call before it was boxed
and sent out. He earned his reputation of being called one of the best
turkey call makers the world has ever seen according to writer Earl
Mickel. He was unique and he marketed himself as such along with the
product he sold.
Daddy taught me first to do everything I undertook with excellence.
He taught me that you could write your own paycheck. He taught me that I
was unique, there is no one on earth like you, he would tell me. He
also taught me how to market, unknowingly, because he wasn't
alive when I started my real estate career but the years growing up that
I watched him go from an ordinary man who nobody knew to a national
icon who's craft is treasured and will be treasured for generations. A
man who's had books written about him and has earned the title of the
"Stradivarius Of Turkey Call Makers" I watched as he refused to let
rejection stop him, he just found a way around it. I will probably never
obtain the fame that he has and I'm certainly not the most successful
Realtor of all time but I do have his determination and his drive. I do have a blue
print to go by on how to market my product, real estate, I have the values instilled in
